One of my most successful routine activities is that on arrival to our preschool special needs classroom, each student has a laminated sheet with their name printed (using computer publishing software) and then the letters involved are individually laminated and velcroed to bottom of the page. The child arranges the letters correctly for their name. When completed successfully, the child is questioned according to his/her current abilities. This activity may begin with a shortened form of their first name (ie. Jon for Jonathan) and altered as the student progresses (entire first name, last name etc.). The next step, the child is given another laminated sheet with their name on a sentence strip at the top and blank sentence strip at the bottom. The students then write their name using washable markers. Progress is writing their name can be kept by periodically dating and copying the laminated name sheets(1 for your records, 1 sent home). The students often feel very proud of their accomplishments! End of the school year, both of these laminated sheets are sent home with the child to reinforce their skills.
